Antecedentes

This course introduces students to the guiding principles of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their application within organizations - public, private, and not-for-profit. Students are able to document an organizational strategic plan that addresses specific targets and formulates appropriate metrics to verify the impact of the goals.

Objetivos del aprendizaje

On successful completion of the course, students will be able to:

1. Explain the development of the UN SDGs and their function in guiding development activities

2. Analyse and explain the relationship between goals, targets, and indicators within the UN SDG framework

3. Develop and apply a range of UN SDGs as part of the strategic plan for an organization, connecting organizational goals to those of the 2030 Development Agenda

Contenido y estructura

  • Historical development of the sustainable development domain including precursor frameworks (eg, UN Millennium Development Goals)
  • Parallel development frameworks that impact upon the UN SDGs (eg, New Urban Agenda, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction)
  • Implications for municipal governments include development controls, urban planning mechanisms and resilient development principles
  • Implications for private sector organisations include zero carbon production, corporate social responsibility and triple bottom line value chain management
  • Implications for non-government organizations including social justice, social enterprise and community engagement
  • The UN SDGs, targets and indicators across a range of organisations found within society.

Metodología

Learning activities include, among others, 2 hours of face-to-face or online lectures per week for 12 weeks. The student will complete a briefing document, organizational outline strategy and organisational final strategy by way of required assessment tasks.

Público objetivo

This course is intended for decision-makers from local governments, representatives of service providers (e.g. national governments, private sector and NGOs) and international organisations who are involved in the social development sector.

Información adicional

Students who successfully complete the course with a Credit grade of 65 or above will be eligible to receive a UNITAR-CIFAL Certificate of Completion.
