The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) conducts a five-day training at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration of Ghana in Accra, in partnership with the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF).

Objectifs de l'événement

The goal of the Climate Change Diplomacy Training is to equip CVF Fellows and Members from the MoFA with the fundamentals in the fields of Climate Change Diplomacy, including the topics of Climate Science and Mitigation, Engaging with the Media, Global South Advocacy, Adaptation and Financial Mechanisms, Heading to the COP 28 Peer-to-Peer Learning Session. 

Objectifs d'apprentissage

By the end of the programme, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the fundamental concepts of climate science and mitigation strategies to effectively address the challenges of climate change;
  • Develop the knowledge required to effectively engage with media to communicate climate-related information, raise awareness, and promote climate action;
  • Learn about the unique challenges and opportunities for Youth Activists and Global South nations in climate change negotiations and develop advocacy skills to represent their interests effectively;
  • Acquire a comprehensive understanding of climate adaptation strategies and their importance in building resilience to the impacts of climate change;
  • Explore the various financial mechanisms available for climate mitigation and adaptation;
  • Gain insights into Ghana's involvement in the carbon market, including carbon offset projects and the economic implications for the country;
  • Collaborate with peers to share knowledge, insights, and best practices related to COP 28, with the aim of enhancing understanding and preparation for the upcoming conference.

Contenu et structure

UNITAR MDP engages 36 participants in interactive training sessions on core topics of Climate Change Diplomacy. UNITAR senior expert trainer Mr. Marcelo Rocha introduces the main concepts of Climate Mitigation to the participants who connect the acquired knowledge to their local and regional contexts. UNITAR trainer Ms. Mary Jane Enchill shares her extensive experience in Climate Adaptation and conducts a simulation exercise with the participants. Ms. Nadia Owusu and Mr. David Ngigi Munene share their field experience on COP.

Méthodologie

The course is designed to be interactive and participatory, including various pedagogical tools to enable the participants to function effectively and efficiently in multilateral conferences. The course will be built on four pedagogical pillars: concept learning (lectures and presentations), role-playing (group exercises), experience sharing (roundtable discussions) and exposure to the various concepts. 

Audience visée

The course targets mid to senior-level government officials in ministries, diplomats and CVF Fellows. The workshop is also open to staff of intergovernmental/nongovernmental organizations.
