With the purpose of addressing the urgent need for monitoring cultural properties, as defined under Article 1 of the 1954 Hague Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict, in Ukraine, an agreement between UNITAR and UNESCO was signed on 16 May 2022. Based on this agreement, UNESCO has been monitoring with UNOSAT, via satellite imagery, cultural property in Ukraine for damage which have – or may occur – as a result of the hostilities.

This agreement enables UNESCO and UNITAR/UNOSAT to continue their cooperation to contribute to the safeguarding of the Ukrainian cultural heritage, and notably through the Project “Support for Ukraine in Culture and Education through UNESCO – Emergency response for World Heritage and cultural property: damage assessment and protection”, funded by the Government of Japan through the funds-in-trust, and in particular to the following Outcomes:

  1. Continuation of the remote monitoring at the site and urban levels.
  2. Reinforce in-situ damage assessment with remote monitoring.
  3. Support in establishing an emergency preparedness plan for Ukrainian cities.
  4. Coordination and data exchange with international partners involved in data collection.
  5. Capacity building training for the usage of satellite imagery and data interpretation.

At the end of the training, participants should be able to:

  • Retain basic foundational concepts of: Geospatial Information Technology (GIT), Geospatial Information Systems (GIS), Earth Observation (EO) and Remote sensing (RS), Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), and satellite imagery.
  • Comprehend the significance of the UN-ASIGN application, as well as understand how to use its basic functions.
  • Access United Nations Satellite Centre (UNOSAT) products online.
